ASTROSTRENGTH

Empowering Explorers

The official physical preparation programme of the

Asclepios V Mission

Hi, I'm Paul Iliffe, Strength & Conditioning Coach to aspiring astronauts and Founder of AstroStrength.

I created AstroStrength to empower explorers of the final frontier.

Space exploration has so many challenges, from the technical engineering, to the psychological and the physiological. I've designed AstroStrength to help with part of this complex challenge, namely helping you to be physically prepared.

AstroStrength is a physical preparation system for aspiring and active astronauts.

Of course, astronauts must maintain a minimum level of athletic ability to be healthy. But that is the bare minimum.

A more advanced level of physical preparedness empowers the astronaut for high performance operations and emergency scenarios. This is not about becoming a competitive athlete. This about being ready for the nominal mission and contingency scenarios. For example, the ability (or inability) to lift and carry an unconscious crewmate to safety may be a matter of life or death.

To empower prospective astronauts for their missions, Astro Strength provides a progressive 3-stage training programme.

Stage 1 - Survive Space

Your minimum requirement is to survive the expedition. Stage 1 of AstroStrength helps you to do this. In this stage you focus on fundamental physical strength and conditioning, so that you will be ready to stay healthy and survive the mission.

Stage 2 - High Performance Operations

Don’t just survive, thrive! Stage 2 prepares you for the dynamic, asymmetric, and compound movements, which you will experience in everyday operations, particularly on the Lunar or Martian surface. Achieve all your mission objectives with high performance.

Stage 3 - Handling Emergencies

Be ready for the worst. Be ready to handle yourself and support crewmates in contingency scenarios. Stage 3 develops advanced abilities to escape from emergency situations, such as crash landings, including the ability to carry crewmates. This is a matter of life or death.

In this podcast interview I tell the story of how I went from a career in Spacecraft Operations to developing AstroStrength.
